Mission Statement

At Tibetan Cultural School, our mission is to preserve and promote Tibetan language and culture for the younger generation in the West. Serving a diverse student body of approximately 90 learners aged 5 to 18, we offer a nurturing environment where students immerse themselves in Tibetan traditions through a comprehensive curriculum spanning kindergarten to 6th grade. Supported by a dedicated team of about 25 volunteer teachers, we are committed to fostering a deep appreciation for Tibetan heritage, ensuring that these precious traditions are upheld and passed on to future generations.

The Importance of Preserving Tibetan Language and Culture:

Preserving Tibetan language and culture is vital for several key reasons:

Cultural Identity: Tibetan language and traditions are at the heart of Tibetan identity, encapsulating centuries of history, philosophy, and values that define the Tibetan way of life. By honoring and celebrating these traditions, we help future generations understand, embrace, and carry forward their rich cultural heritage.

Linguistic Heritage: Tibetan is a unique and ancient language with its own script, literature, and structure. It is a vessel for Tibetan Buddhist teachings, historical texts, and traditional knowledge. Preserving this language is essential for maintaining the depth and richness of Tibetan thought and spirituality.

Community Bonding: Language and culture are powerful tools for building and maintaining community cohesion. By fostering a shared cultural experience among the younger generation, we strengthen connections within the Tibetan community in the West, creating a supportive network that celebrates and upholds our collective heritage.

Historical Context: The Tibetan exodus began in 1959 following the Chinese invasion of Tibet, which forced many Tibetans to flee their homeland in search of safety and freedom. Colorado's similar climate and geography provided a natural refuge for many Tibetan refugees, who have since settled in the region, working to preserve their cultural traditions while adapting to a new life.

Educational Enrichment: Learning about one’s own culture and language enhances cognitive development and academic achievement. It also instills a sense of pride and belonging, contributing significantly to students' overall well-being and personal growth.

Cultural Diversity: In a globalized world, preserving diverse cultures enriches the human experience. Tibetan culture, with its distinctive practices, art forms, and philosophies, offers valuable perspectives that contribute to the broader cultural tapestry.

Through our unwavering commitment to these principles and the invaluable support of our dedicated volunteers, Tibetan Cultural School ensures that Tibetan language, culture, and religion continue to flourish and inspire, both within our community and beyond.
